DESIGNING YOUR LIVING ROOM

When I’m asked for a quick tip on decorating, I always suggest focusing on one room at a time. This will allow you to put your all in into one room and get it right the first time. Since the living room can set the tone for the rest of the house, most of my clients prefer to start with this room. The living room is technically the most important room in the house, and the other rooms can be seen as revolving around the living room. The living room is also typically the first room your visitors/ guests will see, so it is important to give them the right impression of your home. And like they say, “you never get a second chance at a first impression”.

Whether you are decorating your first place or upgrading your current place, it is important to evaluate what you want to do in the room and how you would like it to feel. Pick out the big pieces of the puzzle first, like the sofa, wall color, and wood accents like your TV console. Once you have these down, it will make finding the perfect accessories a breeze. Above this room is accessorized with a rug, accent pillows, and lamps. This arrangement could fit appropriately in a small space and in a larger space. If the room were larger one may consider adding a loveseat to the mix. If the room were smaller one may consider pulling the furniture closer and eliminating the bench.

Another thing to consider when decorating your living room is whether or not you have an open floor plan or an adjacent room. In this case, one should focus on making the rooms compliment each other. For example the wall color, furniture, and textiles (fabrics and rugs) should be somewhat cohesive. Overall the most important goal when decorating your home, is to set the proper tone as soon as someone opens your front door.
